Short biography

Over the past 25 years of his postdoctoral career, Dr. Kalin has established himself as a globally recognised scientist in the fields of wear and friction mechanisms of advanced materials, boundary lubrication and tribochemistry, interfacial phenomena, wetting and boundary slip in EHL, superlubricity and nanoparticles, experimental contact mechanics and thermal contact behaviour. His interdisciplinary research has led to numerous new insights and discoveries of tribological phenomena, resulting in 84 invited lectures at tribology conferences worldwide; 28 were keynote and plenary. He has received several awards: the prestigious ASME Mayo D. Hersey Award, ASME Burt L. Newkirk Award, Fellow of STLE, the Slovenian state award Zois Prize for early scientific achievements, the highest Slovenian state scientific award, the Zois Award for outstanding achievements, the 10 best scientific achievements of the University of Ljubljana in a given year and the Golden Plaque of the University of Ljubljana, the highest award for an active professor. His international recognition has led him to position of Editor-in-Chief of Lubrication Science (Wiley), a member of the European Academy of Science and Arts, Slovenian Academy of Engineering Sciences, and International Academy of Engineering Sciences. He was two-time elected Deputy President of the International Tribology Council (ITC), a director in Board of Directors of STLE, and an Executive board member of ASME Tribology division, thus being part of leadership of all three global tribology organisations. He served in a 4-year position as Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, having previously twice acted for 4 years as Vice Dean for Research and Vice Dean for Master's and Doctoral Studies. During his tenure, he initiated and led the project to design and construct a new 53,000 m2 Faculty of Mechanical Engineering building, a multi-generational project of national importance, for the realisation of which he is instrumental. Dr. Kalin has led 57 large, 3-year, or more, projects, most of which awarded in international competition, and he led over 150 shorter industrial projects with Slovenian industry and many of the world's leading lubricant, coating and automotive companies. He has been coordinating for more than 10 years a European platform for green tribology »Tribos«, which is recognized worldwide, and includes a unique joint European 2-year master’s program in tribology (Tribos and Tribos+), a joint European PhD program for research and education in green tribology (Green Tribos) and a post-doc program in tribology for green mobility (Mobility-GT), which contributed immensely to the education and training of about 170 young researchers and leaders in tribology from more than 40 countries. He mentored 29 PhD students and hosted 20 visiting scholars in the Lab he leads. Dr. Kalin’s archival contributions have resulted in 250 peer-reviewed articles with more than 11.000 Google scholar citations, and h-index of 58. Based on Elsevier/Stanford database he has been, for the past 6 years, in the top 2% of cited scientist in field of Engineering, and top 0.3% in the field of Mechanical Engineering and Transport.
