prof. dr. Mitjan Kalin
Short biography
Dr. Kalin’s areas of research are wear and friction mechanisms of advanced materials, nanoscale interface phenomena, as well as boundary lubrication and films for green lubrication technologies. He has published about 170 peer-reviewed journal papers, 13 book chapters, 2 books and 12 patents. His H-index is 36 with more than 4.100 citations. He has over 400 conference contributions, including 56 invited talks world-wide, of which 12 keynote talks. In his career he has led over 40 larger, typically three-year projects (Project coordinator or Group leader), mostly international, working with companies like Volvo, Bekaert, Sulzer, SKF, Total, Lubrizol, Atlas Copco, Oerlikon, Dow, etc. to mention some of the most renown. Moreover, he led numerous smaller industrial projects, there are over 150 such reports registered. He is currently a coordinator of EU EACEA Erasmus Mundus Joint European Master Study in Tribology – TRIBOS+, and MSCA ITN EJD Joint European Doctorate programme GreenTRIBOS, funded by EU.
He has been also active as a member of Editorial boards or Guest editor of 8 international journals, including six years appointment as Associate Editor of the ASME Journal of Tribology, and currently at the Frontiers in Mechanical Engineering. Since 2012 he serves as the Editor-in-chief of Lubrication Science (Wiley). He is active reviewer of more than 90 peer-review journals and evaluator of European projects for FP6, FP7, H2020, ERC, ESF and many national funding agencies world-wide like NSF (USA), FWO (B), ANR (F), etc. He is also organiser of tracks, and conference sessions, as well as member of organising and programme committees in almost all international conferences, including being a Conference Chair of 6 international conferences (Frontiers of boundary lubrication Seville 2009, Polytrib 2014-2022 and Ecotrib 2017) and 4 national (Slotrib 2014-2022).
He has received several awards, including a prestigious ASME Burt L. Newkirk Award (2006), Slovenian state award Zois Prize (2006), Fellow STLE (2012), the Top 10 most acknowledged scientific achievements at University of Ljubljana (2014) and the highest scientific award in Slovenia, the Zois Award (2015). He is a member of Member of Slovenian Academy of Engineering (2021) and Member of the International Academy of Engineering; (2019). He is acting in his second term (2022-2026) as a Exective board member of the world tribology association International Tribology Council ITC and was elected its Deputy President in 2018-2022.
Since 2010 he holds the position of Full Professor at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, University of Ljubljana. He is the Head of the Laboratory for Tribology and Interface Nanotechnology and of the Chair for Tribology and Maintenance Technology. After serving in two 4-years terms as a Vice-dean for research (2007-2011) and for master and doctoral studies (2013-2017), he was elected the Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering (2017-2021).
