The aim of the proposed project is to investigate and understand possibilities for reduction of lubrication film thickness in mechanical systems, obtained through application of micro-nano films, biodegradable lubricants and hard coatings. Ultimate goal of the project are oil-free mechanical systems.

In a last couple of years a tremendous research work has been done in the field of development and characterization of advanced materials, hard coatings and lubricants, mainly to improve reliability, efficiency and safety of mechanical systems. Recently, more and more emphasis is put on ecology and reduction of energy consumption through reduction of friction.

Investigations will be performed on a pair of gears, representing typical machine component and on hot forging dies, being on of the most thermo-mechanically stressed tribological components. Results of this investigation will give estimation on the possibilities of achieving oil-free or micro-nano lubricated tribological systems through the use of hard coatings.
